During a summer of record temperatures, it is crucial for employers and employees alike to be aware of the dangers of heat related illnesses and how to prevent them. Ignoring symptoms can be deadly – more than 30 employees died last year from heat related illnesses.
The three most important parts of prevention are: hydration, shade and rest. Workers should drink five to seven ounces of fluids while working outside, even if they do not feel thirsty. They should also be given breaks to rest, regardless of whether their hot working conditions are indoors or outdoors. If they are working outdoors, the break area should be shaded to provide maximum relief from the heat.
